Request for new gfx card
As my current gfx card is getting pretty outdated (8800gts), I'm looking for an upgrade.
I don't want to get two cards in SLI though, just one good one (and not two good ones either) that's good enough for dx11 and new games etc.
Any suggestions? I'd like to keep it in the max €350 range, so the ludicrously priced cards over €400 aren't an option (I used to buy cards at €500 though in the past ).
The net gain of an even more expensive card is probably not enough to justify it anyway.
I was thinking about getting an nvidia at least, unless the case for ati is very very strong.

Re: Request for new gfx card
my twin linked gtx 280s were more than 500 Euro
the new 480GTX is the new nvidia and is apparantly the new fastest single gpu card but ive been out the loop for a while.
supposedly the 58xx+ ait are quite good too, and cheaper. (but ATi so crapper ofc)

Re: Request for new gfx card
Hmm, but I guess the 480GTX will be over €500 at first, so not an option for a while.
Re: Request for new gfx card
From what i've heard and read, the ATI's are better this time (5850 and 5870) and for your prices i tought.
those 460 and 480 from Nvidea are a bit faster but also more expensive And they use much more watt.
so... i think you're better off with an ATI this time, or wait like me for the next generation.

Re: Request for new gfx card
lol..
who gives a poo about cost and power usage.
'better' means speed. which means nvidia.
need i remind you that ati have been the best for stingey homeless people for the last gen too .
the thing about waiting for the 'next generation' this IS the next generation for nvidia. its a cut down version of their fermi arch though. but one can always 'wait for the next gen' and never get anything.

Re: Request for new gfx card
I thought I'd give ATi another chance recently when my brother asked me to get him another gfx card. Once again, poor drivers let them down with random BSOD's, lockups and game incompatibilities.
For me, the cost of any ATi card nowadays just isn't anywhere near competitive enough* when compared to any Nvidia offering
*once you've factored in £20,000,000 for a development team to rewrite the drivers and make them work properly.

Re: Request for new gfx card
Oh I should also add, I think the 8800GTS is one of the finest Nvidia cards ever produced (I still run mine, the Asus version). Excellent performance and incredibly quiet too, even under full load. I wouldn't be too surprised if you end up a little disappointed with your new purchase as a result, whatever it might be. Good news is, there's a thriving market for old GTS's on Ebay.

indeed they are nice cards

Re: Request for new gfx card
Good idea, I might still get some money back on it. My previous ati card was incidentally the best card of that time, the ati9700. That was a great card as well and drivers weren't really a problem for it.
Afterwards it seems it went downhill with ati.
After that, I got another great card, the 7800GTX, followed by this one. I bought all of those cards when they were quite new though, so mostly around 400-500 euros, but then again, they lasted quite a while.
I hope that I'll get some better performance with a new gfx card out of just cause 2, as I have to set details quite low for it to have a good framerate.

Re: Request for new gfx card
What about ASUS ENGTX470/2DI/1280MD5 1.28 GB DDR5 (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/geforce-g ... 46-16.html)?
The 480 is priced too high still, but the 470 is sleeker and less pricey at little over €300.

Re: Request for new gfx card
Actually, it's less of a nuclear plant than the gtx480 is, which doesn't even encase its heatsink, making for a hot package when handled.
Also, it's not as bad as the ati brute .
