New gfx card advice

Post by Alikh » 29 Oct 2009, 19:01

As I really haven't kept tabs on what's hot and what's coming, is it worth it getting this one?
Asus ENGTX295 TOP/2DI/1792MD3

Or another brand of the gtx295 with 1792MB memory.

Is there something else just around the corner that's going to be a lot better?

dont get a 295.

either do as pyx says or wait for nvidias next offering. prices will come down and performance will go up.

no point buying an nvidia card atm, really.

Always true. If you're waiting for the next Hot Thing to come out and prices to drop, you can keep on waiting forever. Just get the best bang for your buck right now, which would be what Pyx says.

I've had an ati before, the 9700. I didn't like the driver support at the time, which I think nvidia beats ati at.

But if that card is to terrific. What about stuff like physx and such?

Physx, schmysx. You wanteh the fastest, you take-eh the Ati. You wanteh marketing concepts and the second-fastest you take-eh the Nvidia.

I'd have reservations on driver support by Ati as well, but fact is there isn't much noise about it anymore.

So, what if some game looks so much cooler when physx is enabled. You can't view the physx enabled content then? That would suck as it's nice to see more physics stuff in games. If that would only mean having slightly lower fps because ati's card is faster, then I would like the content more.

What does ati have to offer?

Do I look like a salesman? *points at Google*

In the meantime, check out Anandtech (do keep in mind that a 5870 would cost € 329 or two 5770's would cost € 280, while 1 GTX295 would cost you € 480).

Pyx schmyx, so it's generally price vs speed effectiveness here. If I'm missing something in a game, where people with physx see cool stuff, even though I see it at a higher fps, then I'd rather see more cool stuff. I don't know if it's purely marketing on nvidia's side, and ageia's physx has been under scrutiny in the past before nvidia took it over.

I will be buying it at a lower price though, probably around 300-400 or so I think.

physix is good. and i think you can do it on ati systems, but it is then handled by the cpu and you get 3 fps.

So in other words: physx is good, ati is bad, nvidia is good?

If you want to buy Nvidia, you buy Nvidia. You don't need justification

Running a gtx 285evga myself for few months now so far it performs good overal they where pretty expensive when i bought them early this summer or so but now they should be pretty cheap i gues. Dont think the gtx 295 or whatever its called is a big upgrade since it uses multiple gpu if i am correct and most software will not work decent on it , atleast thats mostly the case . Ati is great to did only buy ati cards till few years ago but wanted to try something else. Ati has faster speeds atleast they did years ago on cards but nvidia is more supported with most game since they push their brand on everything nowadays.
