Re: WoW rig
For WoW the latest and greatest in processors still isn't worth it (although those can benefit you if you have a lot of numbercrunching apps on the side). Core2duo will still serve you nicely:
Re: WoW rig
Heck, my old 1,2GHz Celeron II still served me nicely throughout Burning Crusade
Only thing was that the mobo didn't accept more than 384 MB of memory so Shattrath/Ironforge (in lagforge days) was a bit laggy due to all the paging. I leveled 3 chars to 70 with that thing

I need a new comp for Cata I think . This current one has served me well over 3 years now, so i guess it is time for it to get some rest. My budget is really limited and I came up with this: Anything wrong with it? Should something be changed to something else?

Re: WoW rig
yes. get an intel i7 cpu solution
Re: WoW rig
too expensive, thats why the AMD is there . Cheapest i7 is over double the price compared to that one, so thats not really an option.
I might be able to get the i5 750 one, but does it really offer anything worth 70e over the X4 955BE?

Re: WoW rig
yeah, just ignore me and go splash as much money on solely a CPU as you might have been intending for the entire PC. Good advice, J

Re: WoW rig
I just updated my gfx card to a gigabyte gtx 470 and all my wow lag in dala etc is gone now. Since the patch dala was hell, sometimes going down to 4 fps or even freezing for a while.
Apparently, most of that was due to gfx lag on my old gts 8800.
Next up for upgrade will be my cpu (currently q9450) and memory I guess, but I can play all games that I play (like e.g. cod-mw2) on max settings now including vsync, so I'm not in a hurry.

Odd, I have the Nvidia GTS250 (gts 8800 with a new paint job) and didn't notice any differences ...Alikh wrote:I just updated my gfx card to a gigabyte gtx 470 and all my wow lag in dala etc is gone now. Since the patch dala was hell, sometimes going down to 4 fps or even freezing for a while.

I have it paired with an Intel E8400 Core2Duo CPU running at 3 GHz btw.

Re: WoW rig
Apparently the newer 400 series are that much better . E.g. I could run just cause 2 without hitches almost only on lowest settings with gts 8800 while I can run with everything max + vsync on the gtx470 and it runs smoothly.Pyx wrote: Odd, I have the Nvidia GTS250 (gts 8800 with a new paint job) and didn't notice any differences ...

Re: WoW rig
Sounds good Alikh. I wonder how the GTX 460 compares to that. I guess other option for me would be the Radeon HD 6850 1 GB since it is in the same price range. What i have been looking from the internet those are quite similar on performance, so i guess its good either way.
Now i just need to decide if i really want to spend more money on the i5 or not. Since it appears that purely on gaming purposes AMD is as good, only cheaper. It all boils down to the Gcard, and the ones I'm considering will be the choke point on my comp, rather than the CPU
