Perhaps not the sort of sci-fi you're looking for, but Dune (by Frank Herbert) is definitely worth a read. There's also a televised mini series based on it that's quite decent, but I'd recommend reading the series.

Also, agreed on the Luc Besson's films. They're quite awesome.
